NIGHT FIGHTING

15.1
Target acquisition
15.1.1
The table below gives the ranges and lighting levels at which various forms of illumination are effective.
15.1.2
Flares and illumination rounds are fired in the Indirect Fire Phase 5.1.4 and last for the remainder of the period, unless aircraft dropped, which last for two periods. The area illuminated is a circle around the point of aim.
15.1.3 Searchlights
Searchlights must be turned on or off in the request phase 5.1.2. They are destroyed if the vehicle of position they occupy receives an ‘N’ or worse result. The area illuminated is triangular with its far end 100m wide.
15.1.4
Canal defence lights (CDL) are treated as searchlights except that they are only destroyed if the vehicle carrying them is disabled. They are temporarily out of action while the vehicle is neutralised.
15.1.5
Infra red detectors were fitted to a small number of Panthers and these relied on an accompanying Sdkfz 251/20 Uhu to illuminate the target.

15.2.1
The light level number is a modifier on the Acquisition Table 10.6.2 for spotting targets at that distance.
15.2.2
An active searchlight is visible at twice the distance given for the light level. Thus an AA searchlight when switched on can be acquired with a modifier of +2 at up to 1500m, +3 at 3000m and +4 at longer ranges. This applies for direct fire and direct area fire. Searchlights are automatically spotted for indirect fire purposes.
15.2.3
Driving at nightVehicles being driven with headlights are visible at twice the vehicle-mounted searchlight range. E.g. a stationary element is attempting to acquire a B sized lorry moving on a road at a range of 1500m. The basic acquisition number is 5, -1 moving up to 250m, headlights at night at up to 2000m +3 = 7.
